History of Music Video



Early History

* Music and moving images have always gone together
* 1920s -1930s was the era for experimental films
* They made musicals as a genre
*Soundies. Soundies were an early version of the music video, they were three-minute musical films, produced in New York, Chicago, and Hollywood between 1940 and 1946, often including short dance sequences.
* There was also a European version called the Scopitone. Based on technology developed during World War II, color 16 mm film clips with a magnetic soundtrack were designed to be shown in a specially designed jukebox.

1960s Promos

* Hard days and nights along with other rock films coursed a lot of disturbance in there time.
* A lot of artists made little films that just showed them, and were very straightforward.
* There was a lot of drug influence
* This was also the era for the post war baby booms
* Modern art influenced music a lot in this era


1970s promos

* Top of the pops started to use music videos
* There was substitutes when the bands went on tour across the country and the world
* This era was still very experimental


1980s Promos

* Artists began to need promos for every new release seriously
* There was changes in the technology and gaps in the USA’s cable market
* MTV was launched in the USA


1990s Promos

* The booms of the 1980s had amplified in the 1990s, loads of money was set aside for the pop music video directors
* There was an increase of genre based music channels



Online Music TV and Beyond


* There was a increase of online unprofessional music videos being made on sites like myspace and youtube
* There was interactive music videos just for online

I think that in the future there will be more avant-garde videos being made, a lot of animation and futurist settings and characters. I think that artists like Lady GaGa and Rihanna will bring this new style to life. In ten years i think that music vidoes could be made to be showen in a hologram and 3D, also showen in the city on electric billboards. or even soon in the cinemas.
